Mountain Architects

Mountain Architects.  Who are mountain architects and what do we do?  Well, we design homes and other facilities for people wanting to live, work and play in the mountains.  What mountains:  Anywhere on Earth.  Rand Soellner Architect handles projects wherever there are mountains. Mountain architects need to know about the special circumstance about design and construction in the mountains.

For instance, foundations in the mountains can be very tall, if the home is to be built on steep terrain.  The location of the strata of bedrock is crucial to the design of the mountain home’s footings.

Prior to even beginning the foundations, however, mountain architects must possibly administer blasting of rocky terrain to allow the home’s floor levels to permit the type of layout desired by its occupants.  Blasting requires experience.  You have to have participated in this special type of activity to understand what needs to be done to protect your client.  For instance, seismic monitoring by 3rd party specialists may be required to safeguard your client against unwarranted claims from surrounding homeowners.

As the home is built, mountain architects need to monitor the framing and many other aspects of the project.  Siding on the mountain home requires special attention.  The roofs really need overhangs, typically at least 2’.  More is better.  Protect those walls.  The look the client wants and longevity of the materials are key ingredients to the client’s required maintenance and initial and operating costs.

Mountain roofing is probably one of the most important considerations of a mountain architect. While initially attractive, wood shingles can spilt with age (sometimes immediately) and may need replacing in as little as 3 to 7 years.  Shakes are thicker and may split less, depending on your environment.  As mountain architects in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we prefer shakes, because more material means there is less of a chance of failure.  We also specify and detail very thick underlayments to assist in waterproofing roofs.

Please see our “Articles” page for more information about the special treatments mountain architects need to incorporate in their designs to accommodate mountain environments.
